The Frontier Capitolist has not always been a Capitolist. Once upon a year ago, he was a student in one of the most American cities imaginable: Milwaukee, WI. This south-eastern Wisconsin metropolis is a paradise for those inspired by beer, cheese, festivals, Germans, cheap housing, and blue-collars. Milwaukeeans take great pride in their city and way of life, and over the years have turned out some great American music, including: Violent Femmes, The Promise Ring, Pelé, Jeanna Salzer Trio, Jaill, Collections of Colonies of Bees and Kid Millions. It’s now time to add Kings Go Forth to that list.

As Milwaukee often does, Kings Go Forth recall a former era, one we thought was lost: an era of Good Times, Schlitz, and phenomenal soul music. Named after a 50′s Sinatra flick, the 10-piece funk-soul outfit was founded in 2007 by bassist and record store owner Andy Noble and local soul hero and tailor Black Wolf. After playing regularly at spots like Mad Planet, Cactus Club and Turner Hall, KGF realized they had a sound people wanted. Noble and crew honed their 70s worship through practice jams, sifting through Noble’s massive funk-soul record collection and learning authentic 70s recording techniques. The effort has paid off.
Since 2007, KGF has released numerous 7’’ singles, including 2009′s “Don’t Take My Shadow,” which got noticed by David Byrne’s Luakabop imprint. “Don’t Take My Shadow” is an epic track that sums up KGFs stance. The groove is commanding, submitting to its tasty licks and power vibes: soulful vocals on top of chorus singers on top of horns on top of strings on top of congas on top of a full drum kit on top of a killer bass line. We’d like to meet the person who doesn’t jam to this track.
“Don’t Take My Shadow” is on the band’s first full length, this year’s The Outsiders Are Back with nine equally groovy songs. Other standouts like “One Day” and “I Don’t Love You No More” could bring Superfly himself out of retirement.
Because of their size, KGF hadn’t gotten out of the Brew City until this year’s South by Southwest where they killed it at more than five shows. Since, the group has gone on an East Coast tour and gained some national attention. The FC had a chance to see the band on a personal holiday at the U St. Music Hall, and was blown away. And NPR loved it so much, they posted the entire show.
KGF is ready to take the country by storm, and luckily, the country seems ready for them.
