I have a tough act to follow. Actually, four tough acts. All week, each member of the FP music staff has compiled his or her top five songs of the year so far. And they are all scorchers. (Does the Dutch soccer team feel this kind of pressure since Spain beat Germany?) In any case, here are my top 5 songs of the year. Thus concludes FPs Top 25. If you haven’t listened to the picks from Psychiatrist, Capitolist, Revivalist, and Funbunny, please do. Your ears will thank you. Maybe your heart will too.
Honorable Mention #1: Ava Luna, “Past the Barbary”
Honorable Mention #2: Miniboone, “Devil in Your Eyes”
Honorable mentions go to two new Brooklyn bands, or as we call them, bands. Ava Luna sounds like the Dirty Projectors with more soul. Miniboone is pure indie pop and won me over at a furious show in June at the Knitting Factory. Both bands play often, so be sure to add them to your summer concert calendar.
5. Ana Tijoux, 1977
I saw the Chilean MC open for Sharon Jones this spring. Amor a primera vista.
4. The Magic Kids, “Summer”
Summertime is for sweethearts and the Magic Kids prove it with their lo-fi take on surf music. Need to woo someone with a mix tape? Make this the first song.

3. Nas and Damian Marley, “Nah Mean”
Nas rejuvenated his career with Distant Relatives, on which he speaks rap star and Marley speaks patois. “Nah Mean” starts with a hot minute of Junior Gong’s setup before Nas explodes onto the track. By the way, the song title is short for “Know what I mean?”

2. Punch Brothers, “Alex”
OK, I’m a biased fan of Punch Brothers. I’ve seen them perform many times and my brother is making a documentary film about the band. With the doe-eyed melancholy of a McCartney Beatles tune, “Alex” is the least quirky song on their new record Antifogmatic. But it’s been burned in my head since I heard it live last year at Carnegie Hall and the Living Room. It’s a classic Love Triangle song that builds you up, breaks you down, then puts you back together.
1. Vampire Weekend, “California English”
Like many people, I wondered if Vampire Weekend could follow the perfection of their eponymous debut, nah mean. Their sophomore effort comes close, with several tracks that could have made this list, including “Holiday” and “Giving Up the Gun.” Here, the verse is an onslaught of semi-sensical satire of preppy privilege, with enough Auto Tune to make Drake proud. The chorus rocks the catchy ii-V-I progression that Vampire Weekend loves. And the stop time breakdown gets me every time. Please don’t lose your faith in the good earth.
